Cleaning up Rocketdyne
local heroes!
The agreement between KB Homes and the DTSC is certainly the most positive development I’ve seen during the
past three years.  I am confident that Norm Riley, Project Director for the DTSC, intends to do his best to get to
the truth about whether or not it is safe to build in Runkle Canyon.  I am not as confident concerning the motives
of Boeing, KB Homes, or the Simi Valley City Council.  If, as the saying goes, past actions are the best predictor of
future behavior, we could be in trouble.

Runkle Canyon - Safest Soil in Simi Valley?
City of Simi Valley and KB Homes' soil radiation tests are amazingly
low -- the lab data missing --
Rev. Southwick wants answers
When the Ventura County Star published "Runkle Canyon's safe, says developer" on December 21, they were
reporting on the super-low strontium-90 readings tested for by the developer, KB Homes, in October. Now the
City of Simi Valley's tests have come back and they are even lower than the developer's: about a
quarter of
normal
"background" of this deadly radiation typically found in this area.

In a canyon sitting under the shadow of the old Rocketdyne lab, site of this country's worst nuclear meltdown, and
where previous developer
Sr-90 soil testing was 27 times normal for this area, KB Homes' lab retests and finds
less than 1/100th of what was found before.

Unbelievable! But that's good news
if it were true. That's why the Good Reverend John Southwick, one of the
"Radiation Rangers," wrote a letter to the City of Simi Valley on January 7
asking for the full lab results of the
City's tests, and not just some one-page summary. We also want to see the full lab report from KB Homes.

Why? Because there are ways to test for toxins and, well, get the best science money can buy. These tests were
performed by a developer,
KB Homes, which claimed it tested Runkle Canyon's surface water for heavy metals
and didn't.
This City has repeatedly dismissed revelations of chemical and radiation pollution in the canyon by
attacking the character of citizens who want to know just how polluted Runkle Canyon is.

We want the data and the City is obliged to provide it and KB Homes should as well in the interests of full
disclosure and earning our trust. Numbers and sound science don't lie. The City's one page summary of the 10
sample's it tested seems a bit short considering that on its website is an
87-page report on three samples. Simple
math suggests that the one-page summary calculates to what could have been a
290-page report if it had been
as thorough as the Tetra Tech report. We aren't asking for that, just the complete report including lab analysis
notes and numbers that the taxpayers paid for.

We also want this issue formally agendized in the Simi Valley City Council so we can make the case for a new
Environmental Impact Report for a project that will make airborne over 112 tons of dust, with strontium-90 in it,
during construction, dust that will
fallout on all of us.

Even with the track record the City of Simi Valley has had on Runkle Canyon, we
certainly agree with it about the need for
Department of Toxic Substances Control
oversight of this polluted property. Maybe DTSC will want and get those lab reports.
When we first told the City of the polluted-looking water in Runkle Canyon, they said
that KB Homes told them that they had tested the water and it was okay. So out of
our own pockets we paid for professional sampling and testing which showed
super-high levels of arsenic, nickel and vanadium. So the
City is forced to test and
what they found
was worse.

Citizens of Simi Valley!
Runkle Canyon contamination meeting this Monday!
November 17, 2008 - 6:30pm
On Monday, November 17th, at 6:30pm, the City of Simi Valley City Council will be hearing two presentations about
radiation and chemical contamination concerns in Runkle Canyon by the
Department of Toxic Substances Control and the
Radiation Rangers who have fought and halted KB Homes development of this canyon since 2006.

We will have a presentation to help the citizens of Simi Valley understand the danger of building homes in this area without
a complete investigation of Runkle Canyon which borders the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (Rocketdyne).
We need you to be at the council meeting at
6:30pm this Monday! You do not have to speak - just be there to learn about
this issue and how it affects you and your family!
